Seeking support and interventions for mental health problems and illnesses can be complex. This is especially so for newcomers, who may be unfamiliar with what services exist and how to access them. Various factors can help or hinder whether and how refugees and immigrants seek services. This module identifies these factors and the various ways (“pathways”) clients seek support. The module also considers how services for newcomers can be better facilitated, including a review of cultural considerations and a thorough discussion of language and working with interpreters. This discussion involves the types of interpretation available, and the steps and procedures within different stages of an interpretation session. This section concludes with an exploration of interpretation in a mental health setting.
