As emphasized throughout this course, good mental health is a key to the successful settlement and integration of immigrants and refugees (Robert & Gilkinson, 2012). Positive mental health (e.g., feeling well, functioning well and being resilient in the face of life's challenges) improves quality of life, and this is integral to overall health and well-being, even when mental health problems and illnesses cause ongoing limitations (MHCC, 2012).
Module 9 focuses on mental health promotion, which refers to actions taken to improve the mental health and well-being of individuals and communities (PHAC, 2012). These actions should target those who appear to be in good mental health, as well those who are at risk or who may already be experiencing a mental problem or illness (Kisley et al., 2004). This module explores the roles played by social support, community development and partnerships in promoting mental wellness. It also considers strategies for promoting mental health and addressing issues facing those in the health care sector. In addition, this module examines social support and community partnerships for providing mental health support services.
