Ce module présente brièvement les six troubles mentaux les plus courants qu’éprouvent les immigrants et les réfugiés, leurs symptômes et les taux de prévalence chez les nouveaux arrivants et au sein de la population générale. Il présente également les meilleures pratiques et les outils d’évaluation des troubles mentaux.
Les taux d’incidence de certains troubles mentaux sont plus élevés chez les immigrants et les réfugiés qu’au sein de la population générale. Les taux d’autres troubles sont semblables pour les nouveaux arrivants et la population générale. Une analyse approfondie révèle que les taux d’incidence de certains troubles (p. ex., la schizophrénie) sont plus élevés au sein de certains sous-groupes d’immigrants que ceux de migrants d’autres régions et de la population générale. Cette variation démontre qu’il faut tenir compte des différences au sein des populations d’immigrants et de réfugiés, ainsi que des problèmes de santé mentale et des maladies mentales avec lesquels ils ont été aux prises. Il ne faut donc pas utiliser la même approche en matière de soins en santé mentale et de soutien pour tous les clients.
